A note from Alain

GASTON 01 is special to me because it was prototyped 10 years ago but never actually produced. I have had the prototype since then and it is my go to garment comes winter time. I love its versatility and weight. I did not want a precious turtleneck but rather something you could wear like a sweatshirt yet dressed enough. It's my favourite pillow when taking a flight or the train.

To give your jumper a good and long life please follow these simple guidelines:
  • No need to dry clean. Prefer hand wash or low temperature machine washing.
  • Hand cold wash using a delicate or wool adapted detergent. Do not bleach, soak or rub. Wash similar colors together. No machine spinning, roll in a towel. Unfold the collar prior to washing the jumper.
  • Dry flat, including body, collar and sleeves. Unfold the collar. Dot not tumble dry ever !
  • No ironing needed. If you really want to, set the iron on the Wool, Medium or 2-dot heat setting. Use little to no steam. Do not press to avoid the jumper becoming shiny.

Introducing GASTON 01

Let Franck do the talking

  • Brasilian green
  • Dark blue

Easy like a sweatshirt

GASTON 01 is not your ordinary uptight turtleneck.

GASTON 01 is heavier, comfortable, casual yet dressy. The ultimate winter jumper and your best ally against the cold.

Easy to wear, pair and care for, GASTON is Alain’s favourite piece to travel, whether on him or used as a sleeping pillow.

Soft on your skin and the sheep

A lasting jumper starts with quality materials. We chose an extra-fine (19.5 microns) 100% Merino wool sourced in Australia.

The sourced wool is guaranteed mulesing-free. It is fully traced from flock to yarn.

The yarn is spun and dyed by Suedwolle, in operations since 1928, and known for the quality and robustness of its yarn.

The wool is very soft and non-itchy. You can wear it straight on your skin if you want to.

Never too hot nor cold

Unlike Cashmere, Merino wool is naturally thermo-regulating. It will be warm when it is cold but will not be too warm when temperatures are milder.

A warm breathing cushion

The upper body and sleeve parts have a double layer of knitting to create an insulating air cushion that keeps the warmth up.

The knit is sturdy but not too tight to ensure the jumper breathes well but does not over-extend.

The jumper has a medium weight of 665g. It makes it usable throughout autumn to early spring while ensuring its durability and sturdiness.

True collar

The collar distinguishes itself by being stiffer than your usual turtleneck. It will hold itself well in place without strangling you or losing its shape.

You will give a very different look to the piece depending on how you decide to fold it. Unfolded, folded once or twice, outside or inside, it is up to you to explore the possibilities.

Italian shoulder

The shoulder seam does not follow the standard shoulder line. It finishes at the back rather than at the shoulder tip.

This technique is especially usefully for a visually cleaner silhouette as no separation is visible on the front. The byproduct of this is that the wearer will look taller and straighter.

Scalloped wrist

The wrist is scalloped just where the thumb sits to make sure the wrist position itself at the right place.

It is our signature and will look just right with a GOSSUIN shirt.

Square armscye

The armscye forms a square rather than the classic ellipsis. This way of binding the sleeves to the body is often seen in sports and military sweaters, allowing a higher freedom of movement.

Flat knitted in Bulgaria

The jumper is knitted and finished in Petrich (Bulgaria) on flat knitting machines. It is fully fashioned, meaning it is knitted in shape rather than as a roll.

Pieces are then bound together via re-meshing / hand-linking (when needed) rather than sewn together. The use of this technique prevents material waste.

Our jumper is 100% made in Europe from yarn to finish.

Traceability

We fight for people to own less but better garments.

To guide you on that path, we promise to clearly tell you what we know and what we don't at every step of garment making process.

Environmental impact

Let's be clear, manufacturing new garments will always impact the environment.

That said, by measuring it, we can identify how to gradually reduce it on every new creation.

This is the impact of producing one GASTON 01 turtleneck.

  • 27.1 kg

    Or ~279km by car

  • 105 MJ

    of consumed energy

Or ~42 hours of heating in a flat.

10 years a friend

Originally born in 2009, GASTON 01 was never released to the public. Alain jealously kept both prototypes for himself and has been wearing them ever since.

When we started to think about re-starting a knitwear line a few months ago, we had no doubts about what we should start with.

GASTON indeed embodies everything we look for in a jumper.

It is sturdy as hell and still looks good after many wears and washes. It even survived being used numerous times as a pillow on the plane.

At the end of the day, it looks effortlessly good and absolutely is the kind of jumper you would want to wear every winter day.

We, therefore, made an identical jumper, using the same pattern, techniques and yarn to replicate the success of these long-lasting jumpers.

GASTON 01 was reborn.

Carefully crafted

GASTON 01 is a unique jumper. As with any GOSSUIN's piece, underneath apparent simplicity lies a collection of carefully crafted details.

Bringing them to light is however no easy task as our struggle to find the right workshop has shown. We indeed tested 3 different workshops across France, Portugal and Bulgaria before finding the right gem. The multiple hand-linking operations and the specific hand (the feel) we wanted to achieve are not easy to accommodate even for specialized workshops. This took us almost 2 years and trust us this was agonizingly long.

These are the necessary sacrifices we make to meet our commitment to well crafted and long lasting garments.

We are happy to say that your next favourite turtleneck has been put into the hands of a very capable and family owned and run workshop in Petrich, Bulgaria. In general, Bulgaria is known for its strong expertise in all things wool and knitwear.

Green rush

We wanted to make winter pop a little bit. For us, that meant offering a more vivid colour alongside a traditional dark blue (although darker than navy).

During our search, we stumbled upon that magnificent green. We had some doubts. Working on 5x5cm swatches is never easy. The colour felt almost too bold.

We decided to try it anyway, and boy could we have not been happier. The green is deep and takes a wide range of colours depending on the ambient light.

It is surprisingly easy to pair and will add a little bit of flair to your winter outfits.

Wear responsibly.
